Ballykicline Families
Neary, Carrington, Hanley, Carlin, Brannan, Mulera

There were several families from Kilglass that settled in my county of LaSalle, Illinois. They are as follows. All immigrated in the mid 1840's except for Matthew who immigrated in the late 1830's.

My great great grandfather, Edward Neary (1805-1883) and his wife Mary Carrington Neary (1818-1880). I believe Mary to be the daughter of John and Bridget Carrington of Ballykilcline. Edward was the son of Mark Neary and he had brothers Luke and James.

The following were the children of John and Bridget Neary. I believe John to be the brother of Edward. The children were Luke, Patrick, Bartley, Matthew and Nancy. I believe that John and Bridget farmed land in Ballykilcline and possibly Dooslattagh. I believe John died in about 1835 in Ballykilcline and Bridget immigrated to LaSalle County, Illinois in the late 1830s with her son Matthew.

Luke Neary (1824-1896) and his wife Abigail Carrington Neary (1831-1897). Their children were Abigail, Elizabeth, Alice, James Edward, John Joseph, Ellen, Matthew and Bridget. Abigail is the daughter of John and Bridget Carrington of Ballykilcline.

Patrick Neary (1822-1855). Married to Catherine Golden. Their children were Anna, Elizabeth, James and Clare.

Bartholomew "Bartley" Neary (1821-1855). Married to Catherine Stuart. Their children were Mary, Bridget, Susan, John and Jacob.

Matthew Neary. Married Alice O'Donnell.

Nancy Neary. Married Patrick Cain.

Some additional families from Kilglass that settled in LaSalle County, IL are listed below.

James Hanley and his wife Susan Carrington Hanley. Their children were John and Peter. James and Susan along with their children John and Peter and also Susan's 14 year old brother John Carrington sailed on the Creole on October 18, 1847. Susan and young brother John are the son and daughter of John and Bridget Carrington of Ballykilcline. James and Susan farmed land very close to what I believe is my great great grandfather Edward Neary's land in Ballykilcline. Ironically James and Susan and Edward had adjoining farms where they settled in the USA.

There was a John and Bernard Carlin family from Kilglass.

There was also the John and Ellen Brannan family that had an adjoining farm to Edward in the USA. The Brannan's were also from Kilglass.

James and Bridget Mulera with their children Denis, Anne and Bridget also sailed on the Creole with the Hanley's. They also settled in LaSalle County and farmed a homestead there. I have been in contact with many of their ancestors. Ironically, two of their ancestors were neighbors and best friends of mine when growing up in Illinois. I did not find this out until doing my research some 45 years later that we had a common connection to Ballykilcline.

Also on the Creole were George and Bridget Stuart and their children Charles, John and Mary.

They also had a farm in LaSalle, Illinois.

There was Patrick and Ellen Kane family from Kilglass that settled in LaSalle County.

Edward and Mary also had two young girls by the name of Dervin living with them. I believe they were also from Kilglass.

Bartley and Patrick Neary died within months of each other in 1855. I believe it was cholera. After their deaths, Edward and Luke Neary filed a lawsuit for guardianship of Bartley's children.

On the lawsuit Edward and Luke list themselves as uncles to Bartley's children. At first glance you would think from this that Luke and Edward were brothers. Because of the difference in ages between Luke and Edward (almost 20 years) I think it was more likely that Edward was a cousin to Luke. I think that possibly, Luke's father John was a brother to Edward's father Mark.

On the 1834 Tithe Applotment for Ballykilcline John Neary is listed as sharing land with Bartley. On an 1836 map, the same land is being shared by Patrick and Bartley Neary. This is the reason I thought that John might have died about 1835.

I have family trees for the Neary's, Hanley's and Mulera's starting from immigration until present. I would be happy to send copies to anyone that is interested.

God bless you all.
