James Hanley and Susan Carrington
Thomas born 1798 Family names from Ballykilcline or Killglass Parish that settled in LaSalle, County include: Mcguire, Stuart, Carlin, Brannon, Neary, Kane, Mulerra, Hoare, Carrington and Hanley. Second Generation James Hanley was born in Ballykilcline Townland (located 3 miles from Stokestown on Lake Kilglass), County Roscommon, Ireland in 1818. He married Susan Carrington, born 1821 the daughter of John and Bridget Carrington ( our great, great, great grandparents). They had 10 children, nine of which are known to us. On May 27, 1847 the Townlands of Ballykilcline were occupied by an army of 60 police, 25 Calvary and 30 infantry. A battle ensued and the homes of the farmers destroyed and the tenant's evicted. The government wanted to charge the people rent on lands that had been in their families for generations. In 1847 the British forced all of the people here off their land and gave them passage to America on 5 ships, the "Channing", the "Creole", the "Metoka", the "Progress", and the "Roscius". The Hanley's were on the "Creole", a total of 409 people were evicted. Many of the people who came first settled in Vermont and then many came to Walthom Township, IL. They arrived in New York on Nov. 24, 1847 with their two children, John and Peter. Also with them was Susan's brother John Carrington who died Jan.1 1863, age 26. He is buried in the Brannan plot with John and Ellen Brannan at St. Vincent's Cemetery in LaSalle. The Hanley's did not have a family plot yet. In Feb. 1849, their third son James was born in Vermont. In 1850 they were living in Salisbury Township in LaSalle, County. On June 5, 1854 James purchased 160 arced the (southwest of section 14 in Walthom Township ) from James Morrill for $960. He put down $480 cash and the balance was a loan from Bernard Carlon. He agreed to pay $160 a year for 3 years plus 6% interest. In 1860 they valued their real estate at $2,000 and their personal property at $165. In 1870 they valued their real estate at $19,000 and their personal property at $2300. James died on Aug. 22, 1871 and is buried in the Hanley plot at St. Vincent's Cemetery in LaSalle. In James Last Will and Testament he left the following: I give to John Hanley 80 acres. I give to Peter Hanley 80 acres and $500.
